The Invention of religion

At what point in the evolution did we find the bloody need to invent gods?
The basic idea behind most religions is to believe without any second thought,
but due to our curious nature, that basic idea goes totally against all rational thought we are supposed to have. And in these gods hands we are supposed to put our fate, our intelligence, our drive and individuality and trust that everything will go well because we believe in something that is supposed to watch over us.
Come on! That just doesnt make any sense.
and to add to that insult, all these religions we have on earth are supposed to be the "right one".
"Believe and be saved, death to unbelievers!"
over the millenia countless wars and atrocities have been brought upon humanity in the name of some religion or another. Holy wars are a fact to this very day.
What would happen to this world if every person upon it would suddenly realise that, there is no god/gods..there is no heaven...there is no hell? to be honest i have no idea how that would effect humanity.
Religion is a curse upon humanity and I will talk alot more about that later.
